The Plan

The City of The Dalles was interested in providing a pedestrian crossing under the two UPRR main lines in The Dalles, OR. KPFF Consulting Engineers was the prime performing the civil and structural design and Wiser Rail assisted in permitting with the UPRR and ODOT Rail.

UPRR was very concerned about impacts to their main lines and could not provide windows of track closure to allow for any type of structure to be installed. The design proceeded with the concept of a pipe arch canopy to allow for the work to proceed while under operations. Monitoring is designed to check for settlement in the track structure.

The project involved a considerable amount of negotiation and review with UPRR. Mr. Wiser was involved in coordinating with Union Pacific Railroad, reviewing submittals, advising on approach and design, and working through various issues that arose during design and structural review.
